Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male is the 1995 Eau de Toilette from French designer Jean Paul Gaultier — one of the most recognised symbols of men's perfumery for over 30 years. One of the early works of perfumer Francis Kurkdjian (who later created Baccarat Rouge 540). Built on mint, lavender, cardamom, cumin, leather, vanilla and tonka — a masculine-aromatic opening over a sweet lavender-vanilla base. Fresh mint-lavender on the opening, cardamom and spice in the heart, leather-vanilla-tonka dense magnetic base in the dry-down. It belongs to the aromatic fougère family, with dense sillage and 8–10 hours of longevity. Season-versatile, known as an "evening-romantic" men's fragrance. The blue-striped sailor-shirt bottle has cult status.

Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male — a 30-year men's perfumery icon
Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male is the 1995 Eau de Toilette from French designer-couturier Jean Paul Gaultier, one of the most recognised symbols of men's perfumery for over 30 years. Widely searched as "JPG Le Male", "Le Male", "Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male", in Russian "Жан Поль Готье Ле Маль", "Ле Маль", "ЖПГ Ле Маль" or simply "Le Male". The composition is signed by a young Francis Kurkdjian (later the creator of Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540) — one of the earliest and most recognised works of his career.
Le Male's cultural and fashion heritage
Le Male is more than a fragrance — it's a fashion and cultural symbol. The blue-and-white striped sailor-shirt bottle references Gaultier's own signature wardrobe, and has remained unchanged for 30 years. The bottle shape (a male torso) and the name ("the male") expressed Gaultier's mission of "breaking the classic masculinity concept". Le Male quickly became a symbol fragrance of the gay community, then a "romantic-evening" classic for the wider male audience.
The character of Le Male
Le Male sits in the classic aromatic fougère family, but what sets it apart from typical men's fragrances is its sweet vanilla-tonka base. Mint and lavender on the opening give it a "clean, fresh masculine" feel; cardamom, orange blossom and cumin in the heart add spicy depth; leather, vanilla, tonka and spice in the base warm the dry-down and create the "magnetic masculine" performance. Sillage is dense, longevity 8–10 hours.
When and where to wear it
Le Male is ideal for a 22+ male audience. Evening dates, romantic dinners, birthdays, weddings, club-bar settings — all appropriate. With a lighter spray, it works in the office too. Season-versatile: the mint-lavender reads fresh in spring-summer, while the vanilla-tonka base blooms more strongly in autumn-winter.
The Le Male family
Over 30 years the Le Male line has grown into a broad family:
- Le Male Eau de Toilette (this page, 1995) — the original, the classic.
- Le Male Le Parfum Intense — denser, vanilla-evening.
- Le Male Elixir — the densest, honey-tobacco character, extreme version.
- Le Male Aviator, Le Male In The Navy, Ultra Male etc. — yearly limited editions.
